His Poems About Love, Romance, And Longing Amid The Pandemic Is Taking The World By Storm

It was something personal, but little did he know, people from across the world feel the same way too, and his poetry has since taken the world by storm. Before the lockdown, Alexander was looking forward to his most-awaited trip to the Philippines to visit his girlfriend, Jes.

However, it was eventually canceled because of the government-imposed protocol that no foreigners are allowed to enter the country. Alexander and his girlfriend have no choice but to wait weeks, months, or even a year until they see each other. And so, while the rest of the world stood still, Alexander spent his quarantine writing poetry inspired by the longing and sadness he felt away from his lover.

To his surprise, he received at least 200 comments on each of his social media posts where people express that they relate to what Alexander is writing. Living miles away from your lover and only seeing each other on video makes long-distance relationships hard, but with travel bans and border restrictions, it makes it even harder.

While the quarantine period is filled with sadness, what’s something to look forward to is as soon as traveling is allowed anytime soon, Alexander will take the chance to go to the Philippines, where he plans to get down on one knee and propose to her.

This Arizona-born 41-year-old self-taught poet owes much of his early and continued success to social media. Alexander Bentley was one of the first few poets to begin sharing their poetry on Instagram back in late 2014. He writes primarily about love and romance, death and depression, or past experiences he can never forget. Since then, he has grown his social media following to over 330,000 followers worldwide. He has published four books, most notably “The Raven Redux & Other Poems,” which pays a haunting tribute to his all-time favorite writer and poet, Edgar Allan Poe.

Alexander is such a hardcore Poe fan that he purchased and still owns a rare first edition, first printing of “The Raven” poem, originally published in 1845, in The American Review publication. His other works also include “Eversleep: The Beauty of Dark Silence,” “A Poet’s Manifesto,” and “The Black Mirror: A Book of Sayings.”

On Facebook, Alexander has seen phenomenal growth in many countries, including the Philippines, where he has over 75,000 followers, as well as India, Pakistan, and Nigeria. His most popular poem, “She Called Me Night,” has been read by more than 4.5 million people on social media. Alexander has one of the fastest-growing poetry pages and ranks fifth among the Top Poets on Facebook.

In the last few months, he passed up many notable poets on Facebook, including R.H. Sin and R.M. Drake (both New York Times bestselling authors) and Rudy Francisco (2010 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion and performer on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon).

One can only choose to follow Alexander and wait for his words to turn into viral art of square-cropped poetry with illustrations to give his readers a deep, visceral experience.
